The Old Man and the Dog By Catherine Moore

"Watch out! You nearly broad sided that car!" My father yelled at me.   "Can't you do anything right?"

Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn't prepared for another battle.

"I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell at me when I'm driving."

My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.

Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil. What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack in Washington  and  Oregon  He had enjoyed being outdoors and had reveled in pitting his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered grueling lumberjack competitions, and had placed often.

The shelves in his house were filled with trophies that attested to his powers.

The years marched on relentlessly. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, straining to lift it. He became irritable whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man.

Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital while a paramedic administered CPR to keep blood and oxygen flowing.

At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky; he survived... But something inside Dad died. His zest for life was gone He obstinately refused to follow doctor's orders. Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside with sarcasm and insults. The number of visitors thinned, then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust.

Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated and moody. Soon I was taking my pent-up anger out on Dick. We began to bicker and argue..

Alarmed, Dick sought out our pastor and explained the situation. The clergyman set up weekly counseling appointments for us. At the close of each session he prayed, asking God to soothe Dad's
troubled mind.

But the months wore on and God was silent. Something had to be done and it was up to me to do it.

The next day I sat down with the phone book and methodically called each of the mental health clinics listed in the Yellow Pages. I explained my problem to each of the sympathetic voices that answered in vain.

Just when I was giving up hope, one of the voices suddenly exclaimed, "I just read something that might help you! Let me go get the article."

I listened as she read.. The article described a remarkable study done at a nursing home. All of the patients were under treatment for chronic depression. Yet their attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given responsibility for a dog.

I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. After I filled out a questionnaire, a uniformed officer led me to the kennels. The odor of disinfectant stung my nostrils as I moved down the row of pens. Each contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs, spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after the other for various reasons too big, too small, too much hair. As I neared the last pen a dog  in the shadows of the far corner struggled to his feet, walked to the front of the run and sat down. It was a pointer, one of the dog world's aristocrats. But this was a caricature of the breed..

Years had etched his face and muzzle with shades of gray. His hipbones jutted out in lopsided triangles. But it was his eyes that caught and held my attention.. Calm and clear, they beheld me unwaveringly.

I pointed to the dog "Can you tell me about him?"

The officer looked, then shook his head in puzzlement. "He's a funny one. Appeared out of nowhere and sat in front of the gate. We brought him in, figuring someone would be right down to claim him. That was two weeks ago and we've heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.." He gestured helplessly.

As the words sank in I turned to the man in horror. "You mean you're going to kill him?"

"Ma'am," he said gently, "that's our policy. We don't have room for every unclaimed dog."

I looked at the pointer again. The calm brown eyes awaited my decision. "I'll take him," I said..

I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. When I reached the house I honked the horn twice. I was helping my prize out of the car when Dad shuffled onto the front porch. "Ta-da! Look what I got for you, Dad!" I said excitedly.

Dad looked, then wrinkled his face in disgust. "If I had wanted a dog I would have gotten one. And I would have picked out a better specimen than that bag of bones. Keep it! I don't want it" Dad waved his arm scornfully and turned back toward the house.

Anger rose inside me It squeezed together my throat muscles and pounded into my temples. "You'd better get used to him, Dad. He's staying!"

Dad ignored me. "Did you hear me, Dad?" I screamed.

At those words Dad whirled angrily, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes narrowed and blazing with hate.

We stood glaring at each other like duelists, when suddenly the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He wobbled toward my dad and sat down in front of him. Then slowly, carefully, he raised his paw.

Dad's lower jaw trembled as he stared at the uplifted paw. Confusion replaced the anger in his eyes. The pointer waited patiently. Then Dad was on his knees hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm and intimate friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne.  Together he and Cheyenne  explored the community. They spent long hours walking down dusty lanes. They spent reflective moments on the banks of streams, angling for tasty trout. They even started to attend Sunday services together, Dad sitting in a pew and  Cheyenne lying quietly at his feet.

Dad and  Cheyenne were inseparable throughout the next three years. Dad's bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne  made many friends. Then late one night I was startled to feel  Cheyenne's cold nose burrowing through our bed covers. He had never before come into our bedroom at night. I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father's room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night.

Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad's bed.. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad's peace of mind.

The morning of Dad's funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life. And then the pastor turned to Hebrews 13:2. "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it."

"I've often thanked God for sending that angel," he said.

For me, the past dropped into place, completing a puzzle that I had not seen before: the sympathetic voice that had just read the right article....

Cheyenne 's unexpected appearance at the animal shelter. .. ..his calm acceptance and complete devotion to my father. . and the proximity of their deaths. And suddenly I understood. I knew that God had answered my prayers after all.

Hollywood's Highest-Paid Actors

Tom Cruise Tops Our List Of Hollywood's Highest-Paid Actors

Now add this to the mix: by our count Cruise earned $75 million between May 2011 and May 2012, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

That money is going to play a crucial role in the divorce proceedings. Especially considering Holmes is asking for sole custody of Suri.

[More from Forbes: Gallery: Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes Split]

Cruise and Holmes reportedly had a prenup that will cover alimony, but according to divorce attorney Jeff Landers, prenups almost never include the cost of child support. In New York, child support is based on a formula: 17% of the couple’s total income, with each person paying a proportionate amount. But that doesn’t mean that Holmes is going to earn $9 million in child support alone.

“There are caps,” says Landers. “After $400,000 in earnings it’s up to the judge’s discretion.”

Still, the divorce is likely to hurt Cruise financially, and possibly career-wise.  Rumor has it that one of the causes of the divorce is that Holmes wants to distance herself and her daughter from Scientology. The religion has long been a passion for Cruise, and sometimes a P.R. problem. His career first started to falter back in 2005 not just because of his couch jumping antics but also because of a very awkward interview he did with Matt Lauer in which he talked about Scientology and his mistrust of psychiatry and psychiatric drugs.

If Cruise is once again forced to discuss Scientology in public, it could hurt him at the box office.

But for right now, the actor is (at least professionally) on top of the world. Last fall’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol earned a whopping $700 million at the box office worldwide. Cruise got a nice chunk of the film’s profits. He also got paid well for the upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion, which is scheduled to hit theaters in April. Expect Cruise to do all he can to keep the divorce as amicable and quiet as possible.

Cruise’s huge year puts him $38 million ahead of the two actors who tied for second place on our list: Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Sandler. We estimate that each star earned $37 million between May 2011 and May 2012.

The two couldn’t be more different. DiCaprio now focuses exclusively on adult-themed movies, and he gets paid well to appear in them. When the films score, they score big, like 2010′s Inception, which grossed $825 million at the global box office. But not every DiCaprio film is a guaranteed hit. Last year’s J. Edgar, which was directed by Clint Eastwood, failed to impress financially or critically. The film earned $80 million globally and failed to score any big Oscar nominations.

DiCaprio is now taking a page from Brad Pitt‘s playbook with a showy, low-paid role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film Django Unchained. If the movie is a big hit, DiCaprio will earn a bunch off of the movie’s profits.

Sandler, at the other extreme, delights in making movies that critics find painfully dumb but that a certain audience loves. Take Jack and Jill: The 2011 film earned terrible reviews and 10 Razzie awards for how bad it was.

But  it didn’t flop at the box office. The film earned $150 million on a budget of $80 million. That’s not enough for Sony to earn back the movie’s production budget from box office receipts, but include DVD money and TV sales, and the studio could break even on it.

To determine who the highest-paid actors in Hollywood are, we considered upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work. We talked to manager, agents, lawyers and other in-the-know folks to come up with our estimates. We did not deduct for things like agent fees or the expenses related to being a celebrity.

[More from Forbes: The Movie Stars With The Most At Stake This Summer]

Mark Wahlberg failed to make out Celebrity 100 list due to a lack of press and social media buzz, but he does rank as one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. We estimate he earned $27 million between May 2011 and May 2012.

Expect the star to make our list next year though. Wahlberg has been on fire recently. His January action film, Contraband, earned a healthy $100 million on a budget of $25 million. Now he’s shown that an R rating isn’t the kiss of death. The comedy Ted, topped the box office this weekend with $54 million, making it the eighth-best opening for an R movie of all time. Expect Wahlberg to see a big jump in his payday and for the press to start demanding more of the star.

$75 million

Recent news of Cruise's pending divorce is a blight on an otherwise stellar year for the star. The actor suffered a career setback five years ago when he married Katie Holmes thanks to his couch jumping antics, some embarrassing Scientology leaks and the relative failure ofMission: Impossible 3. Maybe without Holmes, his career resurgence, thanks to the $700 million box office of the latest Mission: Impossible movie, will continue in full force.

$37 million

DiCaprio's last film, J. Edgar, was neither a financial nor an Oscar success. The Clint Eastwood-directed film earned $80 million at the global box office and failed to win any major Oscar nods. No matter. DiCaprio is still one of the few actors who can demand a $20 million paycheck for serious, adult films. Up next for actor: a 3-D version of The Great Gatsby

$37 million

Critics may hate his movies but a segment of the public usually loves them. His 2010 movieGrown Ups earned a 10 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes but was his highest-grossing of all time. Still, even Sandler falters sometimes. His 2011 movie Jack and Jill, in which he played a man and his twin sister, earned $180 million (not quite enough to cover the film's production budget and advertising costs) and ten Razzie awards.

AP Photo/Matt SaylesDwayne Johnson
$36 million

Johnson is the franchise saver. He helped 2011'sFast and Furious become the franchise's highest-grossing film. Thanks in large part to Johnson, the second Journey to the Center of the Earth out-earned its predecessor a few months later. We'll have to wait until spring to see if he can revive G.I. Joe. The sequel was pushed from a summer release so Paramount could retrofit it into 3-D.

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty ImagesBen Stiller
$33 million

Stiller is one of the highest-paid comedians in Hollywood. His Meet the Parents and Night at the Museum films bring in tons of money and his animated franchise, Madagascar, has grossed $1.6 billion at the global box office. His next movie, The Watch, has suffered some promotional problems. Initially calledNeighborhood Watch, Fox changed the title after teen Trayvon Martin was killed by a neighborhood watch member.

Looking To Boost Your Email Marketing? Try These Tips!

01/07/2012 06:39

Email marketing is an effective way to communicate with customers. There are several different ways to approach email marketing, and picking the right option can be tricky. Follow this article to learn more about email marketing and how it benefits you.

Think about adding an endorsement when sending out follow-up emails to customers. You could put a statement within your message that informs them that it's possible for them to benefit now. Include a postscript with a link to an order form where they can request their free offers.

Be sure that you have a reader's permission prior to adding them to your mailing list. You will be considered a spammer if you send them anything without asking first. In addition to making you appear untrustworthy, unsolicited email messages can land you on an ISP's blocked sender list.

When you set up your email marketing messages, try to use a personal tone in each. You will get a much better response from your customers. Try to get different high ranking members of the company to compose messages that focus on the areas they are responsible for running. This will make the message carry more weight and keep the content fresh.

Keep things consistent. Always use the same company logo and colors in your email. Use easy-to-read fonts for text-based information. After you send out a few emails, people will recognize it and will start to pay attention. Branding is an important method to increase your business reputation.

Illustrate to your readers that you appreciate their time in restricting yourself to only sending messages with worthy content they can benefit from. Respect the customers' intelligence by only sending well thought out emails containing pertinent information, not merely sales pitches. Try to add a solution for an everyday problem, an interesting way to use products or information about special promotions in your emails.

Follow-up emails that you send should include a reminder message about whatever you are selling. Offer a variety of options so they can compare products. The last line of your email might include a 30-day money-back guarantee in the event the customer be dissatisfied.

When customers sign up for your emails, ask them for their name. By doing this, you can include their name in each email so the message feels more personal. This will cause your emails to appear personal, and therefore not like spam, which will appeal to the reader.

It is absolutely essential that you have an individual's permission before sending them emails. If not, consumers will think you are spammer and throw your communications in the trash. If your ISP gets enough complaints about you, they may drop you for spam policy violations.

Be sure you have a persistent strategy. It is essential that you have the correct clients in mind, or your work is worthless. Pushing customers who aren't interested to read your content will never work.

Again, using emails provides you an effective way to both grow your clientele and stay in touch with existing customers. Remember the tips in this article so you can use email marketing to your advantage.

Things You Should Know About Commercial Real Estate

27/06/2012 09:39

There are always industrial and commercial properties, but these types of properties do not receive preferential listings that are given to residential property. You need to properly navigate the market to find them, and the tips in this article will help you locate these commercial properties.

Take some time to visit websites that are devoted to commercial real estate. These sites have lots of information for both new investors and seasoned professionals. You can never know too much when it comes to commercial real estate, so never stop looking for ways to obtain more information!

When you are constructing a letter of intent, make sure that you keep it concise by focusing on larger issues first. Save the smaller issues for future negotiations. Doing it this way will allow the negotiations to be less intense and get them to agree faster.

If you are considering purchasing a property with multiple units, check for the chance to go a little larger than you would first think. It doesn't take a lot more work than a smaller location, and it turns a greater profit over time.

Check all disclosures of the chosen real estate agent that you wish to work with. Understand the meaning of dual agency. In this case, the real estate agency represents both sides of the transaction. In other words, the agent is representing both you and your landlord in the same transaction. Both parties need to clearly understand that the transaction is being handled by a dual agent and consent to this fact.

You have to ensure that the terms on rent roll and pro forma match up. If you do not look over these key terms, you could find a term that was not considered in the rent roll, which could cause a change in the pro forma.

Have a professional do an inspection of your commercial property prior to you listing it as available on the market. If they find anything wrong with the property, you should have it fixed immediately.

You should take numerous, high-quality photographs of the property. Include all the defects in the photo, such as carpet stains, or holes in the walls.

Get clear and precise square footage numbers for any space. In commercial real estate, square footage can be reported in usable square footage only, or the total square footage which would include walls and unusable space as well. It's a good idea to measure using both methods to avoid delays in the process.

Ask a broker firm how they make their money before you start working with them. The ideal response is that they are able to balance your best interest with their own. You should know exactly how they will benefit from any transaction they take care of on your behalf.

You should put an ad out for your commercial real estate when it is on sale, do it locally and out of town. Many people make the mistake of assuming that only local buyers will be interested in buying their property. A lot of investors buy property that is not where they want it if it is a good enough price.

Finding your optimum commercial real estate property will only see you half way through this process. A little information goes a long way.

Going Green With Electronics: The Definitive Guide

24/06/2012 07:05

Green energy usage is becoming more popular these days. People who support it believe that it is good for the planet and your wallet. Are these claims true? This article contains advice on implementing green energy in your lifestyle; read this over to make an informed decision.

Did you know that straw can help you keep your home more energy efficient? Straw insulates well and is inexpensive. If you don't want to rebuild an entire home using straw, try building a smaller structure near your home to help you save energy costs part of the time.

If you clean your dishes using a dishwasher, refrain from doing a load until the dishwasher is completely full of dishes. You will use just as much water and energy to run a half-empty dishwasher as a full one. When the dishwasher is used, it is also important to use the main energy-saving feature, which air-dries the dishes.

A good energy-saver is to check frequently for broken seals on your refrigerator. If the seal is loose or broken, your refrigerator will run more often than it should, which will run up your energy bill and harm the environment. You can determine if you need to replace your seal by inserting one sheet of paper in the door jam. If it slides out too easily, your seal is not up to par.
It's so important to ensure your oven is sealed properly whenever it's on. A break in the seal can put you at risk of wasting up to 50 percent more energy. So be sure you inspect the seal of the oven frequently.

When you are installing a solar energy system, you want to be sure the batteries you will be using to store the solar power are situated as close to the solar cells as possible. This avoids power loss in the cable. It also reduces the chances of the cable shading the cells and reducing their generation capability.

Prioritize your efforts to go green by moving light usage to the top of your list. During months that are sunnier, don't use your lights until later in the evening. Use dimmers to reduce light usage and use timers or sensors to ensure that unnecessary lights are never left burning once someone leaves a room.

Bamboo is a wonderful option to consider in your home. Bamboo is a green alternative to wood products and very strong. This fast-growing product is used in a wide variety of wood items. Everything from floors to cutting boards can be made with bamboo. That will save energy in production costs during manufacturing, as well as in recycling.

Now that you have read these tips, what is your opinion? Do you believe that green energy can benefit you? Use the strategies from this guide, in order to find ways on how green energy could improve your life. Implementing even a couple of them will make a big difference and help to introduce you to the world of green energy.
